Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the pressures you face in your life? Is anxiety something you or your friends relate to personally? Are you feeling particularly stressed about school? Unfortunately, running away from the pressures you face at school isn’t possible. So how do you deal with anxiety as a student? The short answer is by allowing God to show you a new perspective on the things you feel anxious about! But that’s easy to say so let’s explore what this looks like practically:

My take on student anxiety

During my time in high school, I used to stress out about grades. There were times where all I wanted was a satisfying grade – but I wanted this so badly that I had nightmares before the test. Can you relate?

I remember my parents telling me to just study, pray and trust that I would do just fine. But I didn’t want to pray. I just wanted to try it my own way. When I finally asked God for help I found peace to study and do the tests. I eventually graduated high school and that day felt like the happiest day of my life because I was finally free from tests.

But then another challenge came: going to college. My main pressure was figuring out how I was going to pay for it. I felt anxious again and couldn’t see a way out of this pressure. I thought I wouldn’t make it. But God helped again, just like he did when I was in high school.

God’s perspective on student anxiety

I’m happy to look back at my past and see that God was always there. When I was in high school, I thought that the student anxiety would last forever. But the reality is that life changes. Even if it might seem impossible today, your current challenge is something you can overcome tomorrow. This situation will pass. When you’re in the midst of anxiety, you can ask God to give you the strength needed to face the task at hand. And you know what? This can prepare you for the next obstacle you’ll face in the future.

There’s a bible verse I like to think about every time I feel too weak to fight a battle. “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small” (Proverbs 24:10). In the Bible God inspired people to write words to warn us about the danger of giving up in the face of adversity.  Let this verse be a reminder that you can do more than you can imagine. In God you can find all the strength you need to face challenges.

Here’s something else you can think about when you are tempted to believe there’s no way out:

Before starting college, I would often go to the beach at sunset.  I used to look at the line that divides the sea and the sky and wonder why my life couldn’t be that beautiful. I thought that everybody had a better life than mine. When I finally got in college I had no idea if I would be able to complete my degree.  Little did I know that God would save me year after year until now.

How you can overcome student anxiety

So my encouragement to you is to look at your student anxiety differently. Yes, there are practical things we can do to manage stress that’s related to school. But you can also turn to God and let him, not your anxiety, determine your future.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that God cares about your struggles. But still, when you can’t see a way out, remember what the bible says in  1 Peter 5:7 : to cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you!
